My gothic short story The Stinker won the first ever SFX Pulp Idol award in 2006. The competition was organised jointly by the leading British sci-fi magazine SFX in collaboration with Gollancz. Among those judging was Adam Roberts, author of Swiftly and many other science fantasy novels, who described The Stinker as "an excellent story, with an intriguing premise". The Stinker became the lead story in an anthology supplied with SFX magazine, and has since been reprinted on the SFX website.
