In 1993, aged 23, I won the BBC Young Radio Critic of the Year Award. I continued to write freelance journalism for a wide variety of publications, including The Guardian, Edge, ScriptWriter, Develop and RetroGamer. For two years I wrote the regular Trivial Pursuit column for the Chicago-based webzine PopMatters about video game culture. More recently I've reviewed for Vector and Strange Horizons and for a short while I wrote a regular column about steampunk culture for the resurrected Starburst Magazine.
