I'm a writer, narrative designer and academic working in multiple media. I've worked for Sony, Big Finish, the Royal Court, The Guardian & Edge amongst many others. I'm writing a book on transmedia storytelling for Macmillan.

About Me

I'm a writer, narrative designer and academic. I've worked across many different media, including short stories, video games and audio drama. I'm currently writing a comic. I've worked as a freelance story designer for Sony and I do licensed work for a number of companies including Big Finish. My gothic short story 'The Stinker' won the inaugural Pulp Idol award in 2006, jointly conferred by SFX Magazine and Gollancz Publishing.

I also do some journalism from time to time: I've written for The Guardian, Edge, RetroGamer, ScriptWriter, Develop, the resurrected Starburst and for two years I wrote a regular column about game cultures for webzine PopMatters. I talk about my writing in a variety of contexts, including writing festivals.

My academic research, writing and presenting explores my various professional work and the work of other creative practitioners. Much of this concerns transmedia storytelling, which I analyse using my idea of 'transmedia memory'. I've written on fantasy transmedia storytelling, the BBC's Sherlock, Battlestar Galactica, Doctor Who and the work of Neil Gaiman, as well as analysing my own creative work.

I'm an Adjunct Associate Professor at the University of Western Sydney. Before that I was a Principal Lecturer at London South Bank University (LSBU), where I set up the BA (Hons) Writing for Media Arts, the BA (Hons) Game Cultures and the Single Honours version of BA (Hons) Creative Writing. Before that I worked at Bournemouth University. In fact, I'm a Visiting Fellow with LSBU and a member of Bournemouth University's Narrative Research Group. My PhD was conferred by the University of East London in 2009 and explores the interrelationship of storytelling and play in video game media. I'm now back in London after a wonderful stint in Australia.
